Visual Communication & Design
'Kayla developed and presented a focused and relevant series of classes'- Daniel Mackay, Brentwood Secondary College, 2012.
I always make sure I provide the foundation for students knowledge on the Design Elements and Design Principles. These are crucial aspects for students to understand so they can produce their own effective designs and analyse visual communications that satisfy a stated purpose.
Unit 1: Area of Study 3 -Design Elements & Design Principles
To address this area of study I developed a powerpoint presentation that includes various examples of Design Elements and Design Principles, encouraging students to identify the key characteristics and describing words that are applicable for a particular element or principle.
VIT- Professional Knowledge 1; Teachers know the content they teach
2.3- know the pedagogical approaches, resources and technologies used o support and assess student learning within the content areas they teach.
Due to my passion for Visual Arts, I am always on the lookout for effective visual examples that I can incorporate into my lessons to strengthen students knowledge and skills regarding the Design Elements and Design Principles. The advertisements displayed below are examples of resources I have acquired that effectively communicate a dominant element or princple to a targeted audience.

To incorporate these resources into VCD, I have split the class into groups who analyse different visual communications and present their findings to the class. Two questions I always ask my students are:
'How has the design element or principle been used?' and
'Why has the marketer applied this technique?
These two questions stimulate students to think about descriptive words to explain design elements and principles, brodening their word bank and language in VCD. It also makes students consider the conventions of each design element and principle in achieving a specific purpose or intended goal.
VIT- Professional Knowledge 1; Teachers know how students learn and how to teach them effectively
1.3- know the principles and skills of instruction and program design and know how to engage students actively in learning.
This powerpoint and group analysis task ensures students develop key knowledge and skills such as:
- Identify design elements and principles used to produce visual communications that satisfy a stated purpose
- Use design elements and principles to produce visual communications that satisfy a stated purpose
- Generate and develop design alternatives using a range of design elements and principles
This core knowledge and key skills will enable students to complete SAC's and exams successfully.
