VCE Curriculum
'Well documented and presented lesson plans, reflecting organisation and preparation’- Daniel Mackay, Brentwood Secondary College.
I am familiar with the VCE Study Designs and use this structure of Unit content and outcome requirements to develop my lessons from Year 11-12 (VCAA 2012).
I have had the opportunity to teach a variety of Visual Arts classes and have successfully implemented theoretical lessons and practical and activities that address key concepts outlined within these VCE subjects. These include:
Art
Unit 1: Area of Study 2 - Artmaking and Personal Meaning
Unit 2: Area of Study 1- Art and Culture using Formal and Cultural Frameworks
Visual Communication and Design
Unit 1: Area of Study 3 -Design Elements & Design Principles
Reflection
My understanding of VCE curriculum is still developing due to the fewer opportunities I have had to teach at senior level, compared to year 7-10. The one aspect I have learnt within VCE is to always consult the study guide and use this information to build your lesson objectives. In the end, I am preparing students to apply the essential knowledge and skills within a subject to successfully complete SAC’s throughout the year and the end of year exam and these are explicitly stated throughout the guide. As a teacher, I want all my students to pass their VCE study and I believe examining the structures of outcomes and a unit during class is paramount to their success, reflecting assessment of learning. When students know what an assessor is looking for and what they need to demonstrate to receive such mark, I think students will be better equipped to achieve as they have clearer expectations.
