Unit 1: Area of Study 2- Art Making and Personal meaning
I always ensure that I incorporate different materials in my practical activities to stimulate inspiration and to expose students to the different approaches and styles they can explore in their own personal folio.
When exploring portraiture in year 11 Art, I developed tasks where students explored different materials such as ink, conte, chalk, collage and different paper backgrounds and used these materials to create a face as demonstrated below.
By devising such practical tasks, students would build the following key knowledge and skills as outlined in the VCE Art study design:
- Qualities and characteristics of materials and art forms and how they may be used to present concepts and images.
- Methods for trialling materials, techniques, processes and art forms.
Use observation and imagination to develop visual creative responses

Unit 2: Area of Study 1- Art and Culture using Formal and Cultural Frameworks
I developed a theory lesson based on four artists who represented conflict. This presentation identifies and highlights ways in which art expresses and reflects culture, how art is manifested across cultures and how art is influenced by time, place, beliefs and traditions. This is important for students to understand, so they can interpret and analyse artworks accurately through the application of the formal and cultural frameworks when they sit their SAC's and exams.
VIT- Professional Practice 6; Teachers use a range of teaching practices and resources to engage students in effective learning
